“We know that what we used to be was nailed to the cross with him. That happened so our sinful bodies would lose their power. We are no longer slaves of sin.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:6‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Hello, ForgivenOne,

Why do we hang on to garbage of our past when it no longer serves us? Gluttons for self-inflicted punishment, I suppose. I was gaining insight from a couple of my Spirit-Keepers the other day (they reel me in when I’m bouncing thoughts) and we tripped up over an issue that recurrently trips us up.

One time, I physically wrote out a tripping concern and nailed that piece of my heart to a wooden cross. That ritual brought me profound freedom-it was a turning point in my walk with Christ. Some burdens must be put down or they will keep you tangled up in your shorts from now on.

I’ve created similar end-the-old/begin-the-new rituals since that have been just as freeing.

Today, let your new begin. Write out your grief, pain, old sin that grips you back into shame, put your note in a little box like a matchbox or a raisin box and hold it up to God. Say, “oh God, who declares me innocent! (Ps 4:1) thank you for use of this … and I thank you it is a dead issue.”

Then, dig a deep hole behind a bush, place the box in it and bury it.

Fill the hole with dirt and walk away.

Ludicrous? Maybe. But, when the toxic contents you’ve buried try to worm its way back to tempt you, accuse you, demean you, shame you – you’ll see in your mind the burial site, and be taken again to the place of freedom in the arms of your Father.

Wake up. Throw dirt on it. Go.
